The Road to Recovery

Updated: May 21, 2020

Recently, I watched an episode of Jada Pinkett-Smith's Red Table Talk in which she discussed addiction. I was intrigued by the many things I have heard in general and also specifically within this video. I thought I would compile a list and share some tips:

  1. Rid yourself of addiction-related items.

  2. Fill your day with activities. Focus on what you can add rather than what you can take away.

  3. Establish a routine.

  4. Connect with accountability partners.

  5. Avoid the slippery slope of gradually going back.

  6. Connect with loved ones.

  7. Feel your emotions. Process your trauma. Go back to the “first domino.”

  8. Tell yourself your own story.

  9. Accept the circumstances you cannot change.

  10. Allow the urges to pass by, through diaphragmatic breathing, etc.

  11. Stay in the present.

  12. Get specific and be careful when helping others. Protect you first.

  13. Exercise gratefulness. “A grateful addict will never use.”

  14. Bonus: Pray.
